On April 15, around 9 AM (EDT), Ethereum Layer 2 network ZKSync was reportedly hit by a hacker attack! The official team confirmed the incident on the X platform near 10 AM, stating that their security team identified a compromised administrative account controlling approximately $5 million worth of ZK tokens, which were unclaimed tokens from the ZKSync airdrop.
Hacker Swiftly Cashes Out $1.7M
The situation escalated rapidly. According to Cyvers Alerts, by around 10:30 AM, the attacker, having gained control of the $5 million in ZK tokens, swiftly began converting them. They first bridged $1.7 million worth of ZK tokens to Ethereum and, along with 10 ETH, transferred them to a HitBTC-related address, seemingly initiating a cash-out process.
Hacker Mints 111M Tokens in Triple Account Breach!
The severity of the incident went far beyond initial reports! Around 11:30 AM, ZKSync provided an update on the X platform, revealing that three administrative accounts tied to airdrop distribution contracts had been compromised. The grave consequence was that the hacker invoked a contract function, minting approximately 111 million unclaimed ZK tokens from the airdrop contracts! ZKSync stated:
Some Exchanges Suspend Deposit/Withdrawal Services, ZK Briefly Plummets to $0.03972
Following the incident, several exchanges quickly announced the suspension of ZK token deposit and withdrawal services, warning investors of potential significant price volatility.
As a result, ZK tokens briefly crashed to a low of $0.03972 around 9:30 AM on April 15. However, the price has since recovered slightly, currently standing at $0.04762, with a 2.9% decline over the past 24 hours, showing signs of stabilization.
